Spokane Valley, WA – A 51 year old man wanted in Arizona on sexual assault charges was arrested Sunday in Spokane Valley, within Spokane County near Spokane, after deputies spent hours attempting to locate him, authorities said.
According to the Spokane County Sheriff ’s Office, deputies were working near Evergreen Road and East 16th Avenue at approximately 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, when they began searching for John T. Newby.
Authorities said Newby was wanted on a nationwide, fully extraditable Arizona warrant involving sexual assault charges. The underlying charges are allegations and remain subject to court proceedings.
Investigators learned Newby might be staying at a residence in the 12200 block of East Fourth Avenue and possibly driving a blue Pontiac sedan with Washington license plates.
Deputies initially found neither Newby nor the vehicle. At approximately 6:20 p.m., a deputy checked the East Fourth Avenue address again but still did not locate him.
Around 7:35 p.m., the deputy received additional information and returned to the area. Authorities said the blue Pontiac was then found parked at the residence.
While waiting for additional deputies, the deputy saw a man leave the home and allegedly identified him as Newby. Once backup arrived, deputies contacted and detained Newby without incident, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities said Newby was informed of the felony sex crime warrant and declined to provide a statement after being advised of his rights.
Deputies then confirmed Newby’s identity and verified that the Arizona warrant remained active and extraditable.
Newby was transported to the Spokane County Jail and booked as a fugitive from justice. Authorities said he is awaiting extradition to Arizona.
