South Hill, WA – A 29 year old man was killed and another driver was injured in a violent two vehicle collision late Monday night in Pierce County, Washington, after investigators say a vehicle failed to stop at an intersection.
According to the Pierce County Sheriff 's Office, deputies responded around 11:10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, to the intersection of 134th Avenue East and 144th Street East in the South Hill area following reports of a serious crash.
Authorities said the collision involved two vehicles in a T bone style impact.
Preliminary findings indicate a vehicle traveling southbound on 134th Avenue East was approaching the intersection at a high rate of speed.
Investigators believe the southbound driver failed to stop at a posted stop sign before entering 144th Street East.
A second vehicle traveling westbound on 144th Street East had the right of way and struck the southbound vehicle.
The 29 year old male driver of the southbound vehicle suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the westbound vehicle, a 22 year old man, was transported to a local hospital with injuries authorities described as non life threatening.
The Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit responded to assist with the investigation and examine the circumstances surrounding the deadly collision.
Investigators said speed may have contributed to the crash, although the exact circumstances remain under investigation.
Authorities also determined that impairment was not a factor for the 22 year old driver.
No arrests have been made in connection with the collision.
The Sheriff's Office has not publicly identified either driver or announced additional findings regarding the suspected speed of the southbound vehicle.
