A University of Washington and Washington State Department of Health study found wastewater testing can detect Chlamydia trachomatis, the bacteria causing chlamydia, across urban and rural communities. The approach could help public health officials track underreported, often asymptomatic infections without identifying individuals. Researchers are continuing to assess its effectiveness for gonorrhea, syphilis and broader STI surveillance.
