University of Washington engineers have built DirectHop, a palm sized, roughly 1 gram robot that uses a tiny motor and three folding legs to control its jump height within a centimeter. Unlike spring powered designs, it can self right and prepare for repeated hops, opening potential for low cost monitoring and exploration in places flying drones cannot easily reach.
