A new study attributes Antarctica’s 2021–2023 mass gain to an unusual spike in snowfall driven by an exceptionally warm tropical “warm pool,” not a lasting reversal of ice loss. Using a water‑molecule tagging technique to trace moisture, researchers show the event was short‑term climate variability. Results clarify sea‑level risk and why short‑term gains don’t negate long‑term warming.
