Winchester, VA – Parts of Virginia could approach their first frost of the fall season Monday night as temperatures fall into the 30s across the state’s colder mountain and valley locations.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, low pressure and an upper level trough will cross the region Sunday, bringing drizzle followed by pockets of light to moderate rain. Rain should end Sunday night before cooler and drier conditions take over.
The change comes as Virginia’s mountains and western valleys enter the time of year when the season’s first frost becomes increasingly possible. The NWS forecast shows Monday night temperatures ranging from about 34 to 52 degrees across its forecast area, meaning the coldest locations could become favorable for frost.
That does not indicate a statewide frost or freeze. Temperatures will vary substantially depending on elevation and location, and the forecast provided does not include a Frost Advisory or Freeze Warning.
Sunday remains cloudy and damp, with highs ranging from 52 to 69 degrees and nighttime temperatures from 43 to 66.
Conditions improve Monday as clouds decrease. Afternoon highs are forecast from 58 to 73 before temperatures drop sharply Monday night, with the coldest locations potentially reaching the middle 30s.
Tuesday will be sunny but cool. Highs are expected to range from 54 to 65 degrees, with Tuesday night lows from 38 to 54.
Residents in Virginia’s colder western valleys and mountain communities should monitor Monday night’s local forecast if they still have frost sensitive plants outdoors. Elsewhere, the main change will be noticeably cooler and drier weather following Sunday’s rain.
