Wakefield, VA – Strong coastal winds, lingering rain and a developing offshore nor'easter are creating unsettled weather across eastern Virginia Saturday, October 17. Wind gusts could reach 45 mph or higher along the coast, while temperatures remain unusually chilly across much of the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, rain will gradually diminish from northwest to southeast late Saturday morning into the afternoon. However, showers are expected to linger across southeastern Virginia for much of the day.
Afternoon temperatures will reach only 54 to 62 degrees across the forecast area, with breezy conditions making it feel even cooler.
Coastal Wind Gusts Could Exceed 45 MPH
The strongest winds are expected along Virginia's coastline Saturday.
The National Weather Service forecasts northerly wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph inland, increasing to 35 to 45 mph or higher in coastal communities.
Residents near Virginia Beach, Norfolk and the Hampton Roads region should prepare for blustery conditions, particularly near exposed shorelines.
Nor'easter Developing Offshore Sunday
Forecasters are also monitoring a nor'easter expected to develop offshore Sunday, October 18.
The developing system could maintain breezy and unsettled conditions along the Virginia coast into early next week.
Sunday will bring partly to mostly sunny skies, with afternoon temperatures ranging from 57 to 64 degrees.
However, breezy conditions are expected to continue near the coast.
Rain Chances Return Monday
By Monday, October 19, temperatures are forecast to reach 60 to 65 degrees.
Skies will range from partly sunny to mostly cloudy, with rain chances returning to eastern portions of Virginia as the offshore system develops.
Tuesday should bring somewhat warmer conditions, with highs reaching 65 to 70 degrees, although forecasters will continue monitoring the nor'easter.
Patchy Frost Possible Inland Tonight
Away from the coast, chilly overnight conditions could produce patchy frost across the northwestern Piedmont early Sunday morning.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants should monitor local temperatures and consider taking protective precautions.
Coastal residents and boaters should also follow updated forecasts as the offshore storm develops.
