Wakefield, VA – Heavy rain and thunderstorms are spreading across central and eastern Virginia Friday, Nov. 6, with some communities facing the possibility of more than 3 inches of rainfall and localized flooding before the system exits later tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, showers and embedded thunderstorms are moving across the region early Friday, with a corridor of 1 to 1.5 inches of rainfall already observed near Chester and the Tri Cities. Isolated locations have received approximately 2 inches.
Additional heavy rainfall is expected throughout Friday.
Forecasters expect showers and thunderstorms to track from southwest to northeast, with rain chances shifting from western communities during the morning toward coastal Virginia and northeastern North Carolina during the afternoon and evening.
Most locations are forecast to receive between 0.5 and 2 inches, with the heaviest totals generally expected farther east.
However, isolated rainfall amounts exceeding 3 inches remain possible across southeastern Virginia, northeastern North Carolina and the lower Eastern Shore.
Communities around Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Williamsburg, Suffolk and Elizabeth City could experience periods of heavy rain.
Localized flooding and stronger storms are possible.
The National Weather Service warns that excessive rainfall could produce localized flooding, particularly in urban neighborhoods, low lying roads and areas with poor drainage.
A Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms is also in place for Friday, indicating that isolated severe storms are possible.
Drivers traveling along Interstate 64, Interstate 95 and Interstate 264 should remain alert for reduced visibility, standing water and changing road conditions during heavier downpours.
Rain chances are expected to decrease from west to east Friday evening, with drier weather returning overnight.
The improved conditions should continue through the weekend and into the middle of next week.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts at weather.gov/akq and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
