Wakefield, VA – Millions of residents across southern and eastern Virginia and portions of northern North Carolina could face potentially severe thunderstorms Sunday afternoon, October 11, with damaging wind gusts and a few brief tornadoes possible as a second round of storms moves across the region.
According to the National Weather Service NWS in Wakefield, morning rainfall is expected to taper off by midday before additional showers and thunderstorms develop later Sunday. The greatest severe weather concern is between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Level 2 Severe Weather Risk Issued
Forecasters have outlined a Level 2 out of 5, or Slight Risk, for inland portions of the region, including areas around Richmond, Petersburg, Emporia and nearby communities.
A Level 1, or Marginal Risk, extends into portions of coastal Virginia, where isolated severe storms remain possible.
The National Weather Service indicates confidence is highest across southern Virginia and northern North Carolina.
Damaging Winds and Brief Tornadoes Possible
The primary threats include wind gusts of 45 to 60 mph and the possibility of a few brief tornadoes.
Large hail is not expected to be a significant concern, although localized flooding could develop where heavier rainfall occurs.
Storms are forecast to move northeast at approximately 25 to 35 mph, potentially bringing rapidly changing conditions to communities in their path.
Residents Urged to Monitor Conditions
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, remain alert for changing weather and identify a safe indoor location in case warnings are issued.
Anyone traveling Sunday afternoon or evening should prepare for reduced visibility, heavy rainfall and potentially hazardous driving conditions.
If a tornado warning is issued, residents should move immediately to a basement or small interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.
The severe weather outlook indicates the potential for dangerous storms, but does not mean every community will experience severe weather.
Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts and local emergency alerts throughout Sunday afternoon and evening.
