VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia – Coastal Virginia is heading into November with temperatures climbing toward 70 degrees, but NOAA's extended outlooks suggest wetter than normal conditions could return later in the month, raising early questions about Thanksgiving holiday travel and whether rain or snow might become a factor.
Virginia Beach is expected to enjoy several mostly dry afternoons before shower chances increase Thursday. Farther ahead, federal outlooks favor above normal temperatures across Virginia while precipitation probabilities shift as Thanksgiving approaches.
Virginia Beach Warms Toward 70 Degrees Before Rain Chances Return According to the National Weather Service, Virginia Beach will see mostly sunny skies Saturday, Oct. 31, with a high near 60 degrees. Northeast winds of 11 to 15 mph could gust as high as 23 mph.
Sunday brings partly sunny skies and a high near 62, followed by 65 Monday and 68 Tuesday.
Temperatures climb to around 70 Wednesday, with mostly sunny conditions continuing before rain chances increase overnight.
The Weather Service forecasts a 30% chance of showers Wednesday night, increasing to 50% Thursday. Friday also carries a 50% chance of showers, with a high near 69 degrees.
Virginia residents will turn clocks back one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, bringing earlier sunsets and additional darkness during evening travel.
NOAA November Outlook Shows Changing Rain Patterns Across Virginia NOAA's Climate Prediction Center outlooks issued Oct. 30 favor above normal temperatures across Virginia during Nov. 5 9 and Nov. 7 13.
The Nov. 14 27 outlook continues to favor above normal temperatures across much of Virginia, although the temperature signal is less pronounced across southeastern portions of the state.
Precipitation probabilities change throughout November.
During Nov. 5 9, above normal precipitation is favored across eastern Virginia, including the Virginia Beach area.
By Nov. 7 13, below normal precipitation becomes favored across much of Virginia, although southeastern coastal areas are closer to the boundary where no clear precipitation preference is indicated.
The Nov. 14 27 outlook again favors above normal precipitation across Virginia, including Virginia Beach, with probabilities generally around 33 40%.
That period includes Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26, and the surrounding holiday travel window.
Thanksgiving Holiday Travel: Could Virginia See Rain or Snow? The wetter late November outlook raises an early question for holiday travelers: Will Virginia see rain, snow or a combination of both?
NOAA's extended outlook does not identify a specific Thanksgiving storm, snowfall accumulation or travel disruption.
Above normal temperatures are favored across much of the state, but individual colder periods remain possible. The outlook cannot determine whether any precipitation would fall as rain or snow on Thanksgiving Day.
For coastal communities such as Virginia Beach, the current guidance provides no specific indication of a Thanksgiving snowfall event.
The more immediate forecast change arrives Wednesday night, when shower chances begin increasing after several mild afternoons.
Residents should expect temperatures approaching 70 degrees by midweek, followed by a greater chance of showers Thursday and Friday. Thanksgiving precipitation type and timing will become clearer as shorter range forecasts become available.
