VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — November is beginning on a mild note along the Virginia coast, with temperatures expected to climb steadily through the middle of the week and reach the lower 70s before rain chances return late Thursday and Friday.
The National Weather Service forecast for Virginia Beach near Oceana Naval Air Station calls for a high near 64 Sunday, Nov. 1, followed by 66 Monday. The warmer stretch becomes more noticeable Tuesday through Friday, with highs near 70 Tuesday and Wednesday, 72 Thursday and 71 Friday. Saturday is forecast to remain mild with a high near 68.
70s Build by Tuesday Dry weather dominates the first half of the week. Sunday is expected to be partly sunny, followed by mostly sunny conditions Monday, sunshine Tuesday and mostly sunny skies Wednesday.
Overnight temperatures also trend noticeably milder. Sunday night falls to around 52 before lows rise to 58 Monday night, 61 Tuesday night and 63 Wednesday night. That increasingly mild nighttime pattern helps reinforce the unusually warm feel heading deeper into the first week of November.
The pattern changes somewhat Thursday. The Weather Service lists a 30% chance of showers with a high near 72. Rain chances rise to 50% Thursday night, followed by a 40% chance of showers Friday and Friday night. Saturday currently trends drier again with partly sunny skies and a high near 68.
November Warmth Extends Beyond the Local Forecast The broader pattern supports the idea that this mild start may not disappear quickly.
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center November outlook favors above normal temperatures across Virginia, while its separate eight to 14 day outlook issued Oct. 31 continues to favor above normal temperatures during Nov. 8–14 .
That does not mean every day through Nov. 14 will reach 70 degrees. Individual cold fronts and cooler days remain possible. The outlook instead means average temperatures during that seven day period are favored to finish warmer than normal.
Precipitation provides a weaker extended signal for Virginia. The November monthly outlook places much of the Mid Atlantic in equal chances for above , near or below normal precipitation, while the Nov. 8–14 outlook is generally closer to near normal across the region.
Winter Still Waiting For coastal Virginia, the stronger story is therefore temperature: a local run into the 70s during Nov. 3–6 , followed by continued odds favoring warmth during Nov. 8–14 .
That makes the first half of November look considerably more like an extended fall pattern than the beginning of sustained winter weather.
It is still too early to determine conditions for Thanksgiving Day on Nov. 26, but the developing November pattern will be worth watching as Thanksgiving and holiday travel planning move closer.
