Stafford, VA — Drivers traveling north on Interstate 95 through Stafford County are facing a major traffic disruption following a vehicle crash that prompted the closure of all northbound travel lanes near mile marker 141, just north of exit 140.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation's Fredericksburg District, northbound I 95 traffic was being diverted off the interstate at exit 140, connecting motorists to Route 1 northbound before allowing them to reenter I 95 at exit 143 near Aquia and Garrisonville.
In an update issued at 2:52 a.m., transportation officials confirmed that all northbound lanes remained closed because of the crash. The closure affected a heavily traveled stretch of interstate serving Stafford County and commuters traveling toward Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.
By 3:30 a.m., VDOT reported that traffic signal timing along the Route 1 corridor was being adjusted to accommodate heavier traffic resulting from the interstate detour.
Another update at 4:02 a.m. indicated that vehicles trapped between exit 140 and the closure near mile marker 141 were being turned around to reach exit 140 using the I 95 Express Lanes.
Officials said the Express Lanes were temporarily closed to support efforts to clear the trapped traffic queue.
Motorists approaching the affected area should anticipate significant delays, additional congestion along Route 1 and possible changes to traffic patterns as crews work to manage the incident.
The transportation agency did not provide details about injuries, the number of vehicles involved or an estimated reopening time in the updates provided.
Drivers are encouraged to check 511 Virginia for current lane closures, traffic conditions and detour information before traveling through Stafford County.
