Spotsylvania County, VA – A Halloween night hit and run involving a pedestrian escalated into a police pursuit Saturday evening, ending with a Maryland man behind bars and facing multiple charges. The incident unfolded as families were leaving trick or treating activities, creating additional concerns for public safety.
According to the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office , deputies responded around 8:28 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, to Indian Acres at 6437 Morris Road following reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle that left the scene.
When deputies arrived, they located the victim, who had sustained minor injuries. Authorities later spotted a vehicle suspected of involvement still inside the Indian Acres community.
Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly fled, triggering a brief pursuit through an area experiencing heavy Halloween traffic.
The Sheriff's Office reported that numerous vehicles were lined up to leave the community following trick or treating activities, making the situation particularly concerning for residents and responding officers.
To end the pursuit, deputies made contact with the fleeing vehicle's bumper while another deputy positioned a patrol cruiser to block its path.
Authorities identified the driver as Drew Mason, 37, of Hughesville, Maryland.
Mason was arrested and charged with felony eluding, driving under the influence, an open container violation, and domestic assault and battery.
He was transported to the Rappahannock Regional Jail, where authorities reported he was being held without bond.
Despite the collision involving a pedestrian and the subsequent pursuit, the Sheriff's Office confirmed that no one suffered serious injuries.
Sheriff's officials praised responding deputies for their quick actions in bringing the pursuit to an end while protecting residents in the crowded Halloween environment.
