Roanoke, VA – An investigation is underway after a person being held at the Roanoke City Adult Detention Center was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead, authorities announced Tuesday.
According to the Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office , the individual was discovered unresponsive during a mandatory round at the detention center on Monday, Sept. 28 .
Detention center personnel and contracted medical staff immediately began lifesaving measures after finding the person, the sheriff’s office said.
Emergency medical services were then called to the facility and continued resuscitation efforts. Despite those efforts, authorities said the individual was pronounced dead at the detention center.
The sheriff’s office did not release the person’s name, age or other identifying information in its initial media release. Officials also did not disclose why the individual was being held or provide information about a possible cause of death.
No details were immediately provided about how long the person had been unresponsive before being discovered or whether any medical concerns had been reported beforehand.
The Roanoke City Adult Detention Center serves the City of Roanoke and houses people being held in custody while awaiting court proceedings as well as others serving qualifying sentences.
Officials said the death remains under investigation, and no additional information was available when the agency issued its initial statement.
The sheriff’s office did not announce a timeline for when further details, including the individual’s identity or findings regarding the cause and manner of death, could be released.
Authorities are expected to provide additional information if it becomes available as the investigation continues.
