Richmond, VA – Virginia residents preparing for the 2026 27 winter season could experience warmer than normal temperatures and increased precipitation, with Richmond, Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Northern Virginia all included in a developing seasonal weather pattern influenced by El Niño.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA , its seasonal outlook issued Thursday, October 15, favors above normal temperatures across Virginia from November 2026 through January 2027. The precipitation forecast also favors wetter than normal conditions, particularly across eastern and southeastern portions of the state.
El Niño Could Bring More Storm Activity
Very strong El Niño conditions are highly likely to continue into winter, potentially influencing storm tracks across the southern and eastern United States.
During El Niño winters, an active southern jet stream can increase the frequency of weather systems moving across the Southeast and Mid Atlantic.
For Richmond, Fredericksburg and Northern Virginia, this could mean periods of rain, occasional wintry precipitation and changing travel conditions.
Coastal communities, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, could also experience periods of heavy rainfall and coastal storm activity.
Will Virginia See Snow This Winter?
Despite the warmer seasonal outlook, snowfall remains possible throughout Virginia.
The NOAA precipitation forecast includes rain, snow and other forms of precipitation, meaning wetter conditions do not necessarily translate into above normal snowfall.
Western Virginia communities, including Roanoke, Blacksburg and areas near the Blue Ridge Mountains, could still experience winter storms when sufficient cold air is available.
Meanwhile, Interstate 95, Interstate 64 and Interstate 81 could face disruptions during periods of snow, freezing rain or heavy rainfall.
Seasonal outlooks describe overall weather probabilities rather than individual storm predictions.
Residents should continue monitoring National Weather Service updates as winter approaches, particularly when shorter range forecasts begin identifying potential cold outbreaks and winter storms.
