Richmond, VA – Virginia travelers planning Thanksgiving trips may have encouraging news as a new regional outlook favors mild weather and possible sunshine during the holiday travel period. Richmond, Roanoke, Norfolk and Northern Virginia are among the areas watching conditions ahead of Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26.
According to the Farmers' Almanac's Oct. 19 update, its Southeast forecast region favors generally mild, pleasant conditions from Monday, Nov. 23, through Thanksgiving Day, with sunshine and a good chance of dry weather.
Virginia is explicitly included in the publication's Southeast region, which is not identified as a primary area for Thanksgiving snowfall.
The outlook does not provide specific temperatures, precipitation probabilities or daily forecasts for Richmond, Virginia Beach, Roanoke or Washington area suburbs.
Geography remains important across the state. Coastal communities around Norfolk and Virginia Beach often experience different late autumn temperatures than inland locations, while higher elevations in southwestern Virginia and the Blue Ridge Mountains can turn colder.
However, the Almanac's current regional projection does not establish a Thanksgiving snow threat for those mountain communities.
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center offers a different perspective. Its November outlook favors above normal precipitation in portions of the Southeast, with probabilities reaching 60% to 70% in some areas.
Those percentages describe the likelihood of a wetter than normal month, not the chance of rain on Thanksgiving Day or a Virginia specific forecast.
Looking beyond the holiday, NOAA's winter 2026 27 outlook favors wetter conditions across the South from December through February.
That seasonal signal does not establish whether Virginia will experience snowstorms. Cold air and moisture must coincide for accumulating snow, and their timing cannot be determined from seasonal outlooks.
For Thanksgiving travelers, I 95 through Richmond and Northern Virginia, I 81 along the Shenandoah Valley and I 64 toward Hampton Roads remain major routes to monitor.
Could Virginia see snow before Thanksgiving 2026? Snow is historically possible, particularly at higher elevations, but the latest supplied Almanac outlook favors mild, generally favorable holiday conditions instead.
Travelers should check National Weather Service forecasts closer to departure for updated temperatures, rainfall chances and road conditions.
