Richmond, VA – A growing severe weather threat could bring damaging wind gusts and a few brief tornadoes to portions of eastern and central Virginia on Sunday, October 11, with the greatest concern during the afternoon and evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, most of its forecast area has been upgraded to a Level 2 out of 5 Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms Sunday. Forecasters warn that scattered thunderstorms could produce wind gusts reaching 50 to 60 mph, along with the potential for isolated, brief tornadoes.
The primary window for severe weather is between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday. Storms are expected to move northeast at approximately 25 to 35 mph.
The highest confidence for severe weather is south and east of Richmond, including areas around Williamsburg, Wakefield, Norfolk, Virginia Beach and portions of southeastern Virginia.
Communities farther inland, including Richmond and Farmville, are also within the highlighted risk area, although forecasters caution that thunderstorms may struggle to develop over the Piedmont.
Sunday's unsettled weather is associated with the remnants of Isaias, which could produce showers and isolated to scattered thunderstorms across the region.
While damaging wind gusts and brief tornadoes are the primary concerns, localized flooding is also possible. Large hail is not expected to be a significant threat.
The Weather Service indicates that confidence in storm timing, coverage and intensity remains limited, meaning the location and strength of the most significant storms could change as updated forecasts become available.
Residents should consider securing lightweight outdoor items, reviewing severe weather safety plans and ensuring they have a reliable way to receive warnings Sunday afternoon.
Drivers should also remain alert for sudden downpours, reduced visibility and potentially hazardous travel conditions during stronger thunderstorms.
