Richmond, VA – Virginia's first full week of November could highlight one of the state's biggest seasonal weather contrasts: colder conditions in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley compared with the generally milder coastal communities around Hampton Roads.
As autumn progresses, freezing nights and occasional early season snow become increasingly possible in Virginia's higher elevations.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, outlooks issued Wednesday, Oct. 28, cover Thursday, Nov. 5, through Wednesday, Nov. 11, and show broad probabilities for temperature and precipitation patterns.
The available guidance does not establish a specific Virginia snowstorm, widespread freeze or winter weather travel event during that period.
Blue Ridge Mountains Face Different Conditions
Higher elevations around Shenandoah National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway and southwestern Virginia can experience substantially colder temperatures than nearby valleys.
Communities near Front Royal, Luray, Waynesboro and Roanoke may encounter chilly November nights, while mountain summits can be colder still.
Snow is possible at higher elevations when sufficiently cold air overlaps with precipitation.
However, accumulating snowfall has not been confirmed for Nov. 5 11.
What About Northern Virginia and Richmond?
Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and other Washington area communities can experience sharp temperature changes during November.
Richmond, Fredericksburg and Charlottesville may also see chilly mornings following passing cold fronts.
Frost and freezing temperatures are seasonal concerns, particularly for sensitive outdoor plants, but the outlook does not establish specific freeze timing.
Coastal Virginia May Stay Milder
Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Hampton and Newport News generally experience more moderate overnight temperatures because of their proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean.
Conditions can therefore differ considerably between the coast and western Virginia during the same weather pattern.
Mountain Travel Requires Attention
Skyline Drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Interstate 81 pass through areas where elevation and colder temperatures can affect travel.
When precipitation coincides with freezing temperatures, mountain roads and bridges may become slippery.
No specific icing event or road closure has been confirmed for Nov. 5 11.
For now, mountain snow and freezing nights remain seasonal possibilities, not confirmed threats for the upcoming period .
Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts for more precise temperatures and precipitation chances.
