Norfolk, VA – The Virginia North Carolina coastline faces a growing nor’easter threat from Sunday, Oct. 18, through Tuesday, Oct. 20, with coastal flooding, powerful wind gusts and beach erosion potentially affecting communities from Virginia's Tidewater region to North Carolina's Outer Banks.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Prediction Center, a non tropical low pressure system is expected to intensify offshore of North Carolina this weekend before tracking northward early next week, bringing significant coastal hazards to the region.
Sunday Through Tuesday: Coastal Impacts Increase The primary concern is persistent onshore winds pushing ocean water toward the coastline, increasing the risk of flooding during high tide cycles.
NOAA's forecast highlights numerous coastal locations facing minor to moderate flooding through Tuesday, with particular concern around southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina.
Communities near Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, the Currituck coastline and the Outer Banks could experience elevated water levels, beach erosion and disruptions along flood prone coastal roads.
Wind Gusts Could Exceed 45 MPH Wind gusts exceeding 45 mph are possible, particularly across Virginia's Tidewater region and North Carolina's Outer Banks.
Strong winds combined with elevated ocean water levels could create hazardous conditions along exposed bridges, waterfront neighborhoods and coastal highways.
Periods of heavy rainfall are also possible near the immediate coastline, potentially worsening travel conditions.
Flooding Threat Continues Into Tuesday Coastal impacts could persist through Tuesday as the storm strengthens and moves northward.
Although confidence is increasing in a significant coastal storm, forecasters caution that the exact timing, intensity and locations of the worst impacts remain uncertain.
Residents along the Virginia North Carolina coastline should monitor updated forecasts and coastal flood alerts, particularly before traveling through low lying areas.
