Henrico County, VA – Residents are being warned about an ongoing scam in which callers allegedly impersonate law enforcement and demand money to post bond for an incarcerated family member or friend.
According to the Henrico County Sheriff ’s Office, scammers may claim to work for or be associated with the Sheriff’s Office before providing fraudulent payment instructions.
Authorities said victims may be directed to send money using peer to peer payment services such as Chime, Cash App, Zelle or Venmo. Scammers may also request other forms of electronic payment.
The Sheriff’s Office stressed that it will never call someone and request payment for a bond . The agency also said it will not direct people to pay through payment apps, gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfers.
Officials warned that scammers can call from virtually any phone number and may manipulate caller ID information to make an incoming call appear legitimate.
One number reported in connection with the scam is 408 638 5320 , although authorities cautioned that other numbers can also be used.
Anyone receiving a suspicious bond payment call should hang up and independently contact the Sheriff’s Office through an official phone number rather than information supplied by the caller.
People who believe they have already sent money to a scammer should immediately contact their financial institution and notify local law enforcement, officials said.
The Sheriff’s Office is also asking residents to share the warning with relatives, friends and neighbors who could potentially be targeted.
