Hanover, VA – A Florida woman has been extradited to Virginia to face felony charges following an elaborate bank fraud investigation involving more than $856,000 allegedly stolen from a Hanover County business.
According to the Hanover County Sheriff 's Office, Melissa Joy Cuffe, 41, of Davie, Florida, was extradited September 17, 2026, after investigators connected her to funds associated with fraudulent wire transfers.
The investigation began August 7, 2025, when a local business reported suspicious banking activity.
Authorities determined that malware had compromised the company's computer system in July 2025.
The following month, someone allegedly impersonated a bank representative and contacted an employee, claiming fraudulent transactions had been detected.
Investigators said the employee was tricked into providing multiple two factor authentication codes, which were subsequently used to authorize fraudulent wire transfers.
Authorities also discovered that the suspect already possessed the company's banking credentials, including login information and passwords.
The business initially faced losses exceeding $856,000. However, its financial institution recovered a substantial portion of the stolen money, reducing the company's losses to approximately $330,000.
In May 2026, investigators traced one fraudulent transfer to an individual in Davie, Florida.
Working with the Davie Police Department , authorities identified Cuffe as a recipient of funds connected to the alleged scheme.
Cuffe was charged with felony conspiracy to receive stolen goods and felony receiving stolen goods.
She was being held at Pamunkey Regional Jail, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for later in October, according to the sheriff's office.
Sheriff Gregory W. Six praised investigators for their persistence throughout the lengthy investigation.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
Anyone with information about computer fraud can contact the Hanover County Sheriff's Office at 804 365 6140.
Cuffe is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
