Fredericksburg, VA – Residents across portions of Northern Virginia face a frost threat overnight Saturday, Nov. 7, into Sunday morning, Nov. 8, as temperatures fall into the middle 30s, potentially damaging sensitive outdoor plants across several communities south and west of Washington, D.C.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, a Frost Advisory will take effect at midnight Saturday night and remain in place until 9 a.m. Sunday. Temperatures are expected to fall between 33 and 36 degrees, creating favorable conditions for frost formation.
Northern Virginia Communities Under Advisory
The advisory covers Stafford, Spotsylvania and Rappahannock counties, along with northern Fauquier County and portions of Prince William County.
Communities included in the advisory area include Fredericksburg, Stafford area neighborhoods, Warrenton, Manassas, Manassas Park, Woodbridge, Dale City, Haymarket and Lake Ridge.
Other affected locations include Falmouth, Garrisonville, Montclair and Independent Hill.
Temperatures Could Fall Near Freezing
Forecasters expect overnight lows ranging from 33 to 36 degrees across the affected region.
Although temperatures may remain slightly above freezing, frost can develop on exposed surfaces and vegetation.
The National Weather Service warns that sensitive outdoor plants could be damaged or killed if left uncovered.
However, forecasters note that frost may develop more unevenly if winds remain stronger than anticipated overnight.
Residents Urged to Protect Outdoor Plants
Residents should take precautions before midnight, including bringing potted plants indoors and covering vulnerable vegetation.
Gardens, flowers and other cold sensitive plants may be particularly vulnerable during the early morning hours.
The advisory is scheduled to expire at 9 a.m. Sunday as temperatures begin recovering after sunrise.
The National Weather Service encourages residents throughout the affected communities to monitor updated forecasts and protect tender plants from the approaching cold.
