Charlottesville, VA – A Freeze Warning has been issued for seven counties across central Virginia as temperatures are expected to plunge as low as 28 degrees overnight Saturday, Nov. 7, into Sunday morning, Nov. 8, threatening crops, sensitive vegetation and potentially unprotected outdoor plumbing.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, the warning takes effect at midnight and continues until 9 a.m. Sunday, with temperatures expected to range between 28 and 32 degrees across the affected region.
Seven Central Virginia Counties Under Freeze Warning
The warning includes Albemarle, Greene, Nelson, Orange, Culpeper and Madison counties, along with southern Fauquier County.
Communities affected include Charlottesville, Culpeper, Orange and surrounding rural areas.
Other locations identified in the warning include Rapidan, Unionville, Reva, Stevensburg, Madison Mills and Greenfield.
Temperatures Could Drop to 28 Degrees
Forecasters expect the coldest temperatures in sheltered valley locations below 500 feet in elevation.
These areas could experience temperatures near 28 degrees, cold enough to produce freezing conditions that may damage or kill vulnerable vegetation.
The National Weather Service warns that crops, flowers and other sensitive outdoor plants could be severely affected if left unprotected.
Outdoor Water Pipes Could Be Damaged
Unlike a Frost Advisory, the Freeze Warning also highlights potential damage to exposed outdoor plumbing.
Residents are encouraged to protect vulnerable pipes by wrapping them, draining exposed water lines or allowing water to drip slowly where appropriate.
Garden hoses should be disconnected, and tender plants should be brought indoors or covered before temperatures begin falling.
Warning Continues Through Sunday Morning
The Freeze Warning remains in effect until 9 a.m. Sunday, when temperatures are expected to begin recovering after sunrise.
Residents across central Virginia should prepare before midnight, particularly in sheltered valleys where the coldest conditions are forecast.
The National Weather Service urges residents to take immediate precautions to protect sensitive vegetation and vulnerable outdoor plumbing.
