CHARLESTON, West Virginia – West Virginia is heading into November with temperatures climbing into the 70s around Charleston, but a return of showers by midweek comes as NOAA's extended outlooks suggest wetter than normal conditions could develop later in the month, raising early questions about Thanksgiving holiday travel and the possibility of rain or snow.
Charleston could reach 75 degrees Tuesday before rain chances increase to 50% Wednesday. Farther ahead, federal outlooks favor above normal temperatures during much of November, while precipitation patterns shift as Thanksgiving approaches.
Charleston Could Reach 75 Degrees Before Midweek Rain Returns According to the National Weather Service, Charleston will see mostly cloudy skies Saturday, Oct. 31, with a high near 70 degrees.
Sunday brings decreasing clouds and a high near 72, followed by 69 Monday.
Tuesday warms to 75 degrees under partly sunny skies, with overnight temperatures remaining around 60.
The dry stretch begins changing Wednesday, when showers become possible after 8 a.m. The Weather Service forecasts a 50% chance of precipitation and a high near 74 degrees.
Rain chances remain at 50% Wednesday night and Thursday, continuing Thursday night before decreasing to 40% Friday.
West Virginia residents will also turn clocks back one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, bringing earlier sunsets and additional darkness during evening travel.
NOAA November Outlook Favors Warmth as Rain Patterns Shift NOAA's Climate Prediction Center outlooks issued Oct. 30 favor above normal temperatures across West Virginia during Nov. 5 9 and Nov. 7 13.
The Nov. 14 27 temperature outlook continues to favor above normal temperatures across much of the state, including Charleston, although the signal is less pronounced across southern portions of West Virginia.
Precipitation probabilities change throughout the month.
During Nov. 5 9, above normal precipitation is favored across parts of West Virginia, including the Charleston area.
By Nov. 7 13, below normal precipitation becomes favored across much of the state.
The Nov. 14 27 outlook shifts back toward above normal precipitation across West Virginia, including Charleston, with probabilities generally around 40 50%.
That period includes Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26, and the surrounding holiday travel window.
Thanksgiving Holiday Travel: Could West Virginia See Rain or Snow? The wetter late November outlook raises an early question for Thanksgiving travelers: Could West Virginia experience rain, snow or a combination of both?
NOAA's extended outlook does not identify a specific Thanksgiving storm, snowfall accumulation or travel disruption.
Snow becomes increasingly possible in West Virginia during November, particularly across higher elevations, but the available guidance does not establish a snowfall event for Charleston or the surrounding mountains during Thanksgiving week.
Above normal temperatures are favored overall, although individual colder periods remain possible.
The precipitation outlook also cannot determine whether rain or snow will fall on Thanksgiving Day itself.
For now, the more immediate weather change arrives Wednesday, when shower chances increase to 50% following several mild afternoons.
Residents should expect temperatures reaching the middle 70s early next week before showers return. Thanksgiving rain and snow possibilities will become clearer as shorter range forecasts become available.
