Blacksburg, VA – Residents across Southwest Virginia and surrounding communities should prepare for a significant temperature drop this weekend as a cold front brings gusty winds, much colder air and the possibility of frost or freezing temperatures between Friday, Oct. 16, and Sunday, Oct. 18.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a frontal passage Friday will usher in colder conditions across the region, with gusty winds developing Friday night and continuing into Saturday.
Forecasters warn that temperatures could fall into the 30s by Sunday morning, creating conditions favorable for frost and potentially freezing temperatures.
Cold Front Brings Gusty Winds Friday and Saturday
The approaching front is expected to produce a noticeable shift in weather conditions Friday night.
Gusty winds and colder air will continue Saturday, making outdoor conditions feel considerably cooler.
Communities across the New River Valley, including Blacksburg and Christiansburg, should monitor updated local forecasts as the weekend approaches.
Sunday Morning Brings Frost and Freeze Concerns
The greatest concern arrives late Saturday night into Sunday morning, when winds are expected to weaken.
With calmer conditions, temperatures could drop rapidly into the 30s, increasing the potential for frost and freezing conditions in vulnerable locations.
The National Weather Service recommends covering sensitive outdoor plants or bringing them indoors Saturday night.
Gardens, flowers and other cold sensitive vegetation could be damaged if temperatures approach or fall below freezing.
Residents Encouraged to Prepare Early
Homeowners should monitor overnight temperature forecasts, particularly in valleys and other locations susceptible to colder conditions.
The exact severity of the frost and freeze threat will depend on local temperatures, cloud cover and wind conditions.
