Blacksburg, VA – Rain will spread across southwest Virginia and neighboring areas Saturday and continue into Sunday before dry weather returns for the start of the workweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the highest rainfall amounts Saturday are expected along and west of the Blue Ridge and north of U.S. 460. The Piedmont should receive more rain Sunday than Saturday.
Forecast rainfall through 8 p.m. Saturday varies substantially across the region. The NWS map shows around 0.68 inches near Blacksburg, 0.56 near Bluefield and 0.50 around Wytheville.
Farther north, amounts include about 0.46 inches near Beckley and 0.32 near Lexington, Virginia. Roanoke is forecast to receive around 0.40 inches during the period.
Rainfall amounts decrease considerably farther east and southeast Saturday. The forecast shows about 0.05 inches around Martinsville and Mount Airy, while locations near South Boston could receive around 0.02 inches.
Those Saturday totals do not represent the entire weekend because rain is expected to continue Sunday. The focus will also shift, with the Piedmont receiving more rainfall than it does Saturday.
The NWS graphic does not indicate that the entire region will receive the same amounts, with terrain and location producing significant differences in rainfall.
Conditions improve after the weekend. Forecasters expect dry weather to return Monday and persist through the workweek.
Residents should expect periods of rain through Sunday, with the greatest Saturday amounts focused along and west of the Blue Ridge and north of U.S. 460 before drier conditions arrive Monday.
