Blacksburg, VA – Heavy rainfall could bring localized flooding to parts of southwestern Virginia and northwestern North Carolina Saturday night into Sunday morning, Oct. 10 11, with most locations expected to receive 1 to 2 inches of rain and higher totals likely along the Blue Ridge.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, moisture associated with the remnants of Hurricane Isaias will spread across the region Saturday, bringing increasingly widespread rainfall through the evening and overnight hours.
Rain is expected to begin across portions of North Carolina late Saturday morning before expanding northward across the forecast area throughout the day.
The heaviest rainfall is expected Saturday night into Sunday morning, when periods of moderate to heavy precipitation could increase the potential for localized flooding in low lying areas.
Most communities are forecast to receive between 1 and 2 inches of rainfall, although higher amounts are expected along the Blue Ridge.
The Weather Service's excessive rainfall outlook identifies a limited flooding threat across portions of southwestern Virginia, with an elevated threat farther south in parts of northwestern North Carolina.
Areas near Mount Airy, North Carolina, are included in the elevated threat zone, while portions of southwestern Virginia near Blacksburg and surrounding communities fall within the broader limited risk area.
The rainfall forecast extends through 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, although the most concerning period for heavier rain is Saturday night into Sunday morning.
