Blacksburg, VA – Southwest Virginia is moving toward its first frost season, but Sunday’s weather will be cool, cloudy and damp rather than cold enough for widespread frost.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, rain and drizzle will continue at times Sunday, with temperatures generally remaining in the 60s across the forecast area.
October marks the period when frost becomes an increasing concern across Virginia’s higher elevations. Mountain valleys and other normally colder locations can experience frost earlier than lower elevations, but the timing varies considerably from year to year.
The current NWS forecast does not indicate frost or freezing temperatures Sunday. Instead, clouds and rain will dominate much of southwest Virginia and surrounding areas.
Rainfall should remain relatively light. The highest amounts are forecast across the Piedmont, where totals between one tenth and two tenths of an inch are possible through Sunday evening. The NWS map shows amounts around 0.20 inch near Lynchburg and approximately 0.13 inch around South Boston, with generally lighter totals farther west.
Afternoon temperatures will largely stay in the 60s. Blacksburg and surrounding higher terrain should remain on the cooler side, while some lower elevation communities could reach the middle or upper 60s.
For residents watching for Virginia’s first frost, Sunday’s rain is not the event. Attention will increasingly turn to overnight temperatures behind future October cold fronts, particularly across the mountains and colder valleys.
For now, southwest Virginia should expect a cool and cloudy Sunday with periods of light rain and drizzle, with the Piedmont seeing the greatest rainfall totals.
