Burlington, VT – Thanksgiving travelers across Vermont could encounter early season snow as a long range outlook leaves room for flurries in northern and higher elevation parts of the Northeast. Burlington, Montpelier and mountain communities around Stowe may experience different conditions ahead of Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26.
According to the Farmers' Almanac's Oct. 19 update, its Northeast forecast region favors cool, mostly fair weather from Monday, Nov. 23, through Thanksgiving Day, with possible flurries in northern and higher elevation areas.
The publication describes the broader regional pattern as favorable for holiday travel. However, it does not provide snowfall totals, accumulation probabilities or specific timing for Burlington, Montpelier or other Vermont communities.
Vermont's geography makes those distinctions important. Burlington's location near Lake Champlain can influence temperatures, while higher elevations in the Green Mountains often experience colder conditions and earlier snowfall.
Communities around Stowe, Killington and the Northeast Kingdom may encounter different precipitation types than lower elevation valleys during the same weather system.
November snow is a normal part of Vermont's climate, particularly in the mountains. However, historical snowfall patterns do not establish whether snow will fall during Thanksgiving week this year.
NOAA's November outlook favors above normal temperatures along portions of the East Coast, with greater uncertainty over New England. Its broader precipitation outlook also does not establish whether Vermont will experience snow during the holiday.
A warmer than average month can still contain freezing nights and snowfall, while a wetter than average pattern does not guarantee snow instead of rain.
For Thanksgiving travelers, I 89 between Burlington and Montpelier, I 91 through eastern Vermont and mountain routes such as Vermont Route 100 are important corridors to monitor if winter weather develops.
No specific highway disruptions have been established by the Almanac's regional projection.
Could Vermont see snow before Thanksgiving 2026? Yes, particularly in northern and higher elevation communities. However, the Almanac's outlook does not confirm snowfall for Burlington or elsewhere in Vermont.
Travelers should check National Weather Service forecasts closer to Thanksgiving for updated snowfall timing, accumulation expectations and road conditions.
