Burlington, VT – Vermont will turn increasingly windy through Monday, with stronger gusts expected on Lake Champlain and across the mountains that could affect boating and other outdoor activities.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, breezy conditions will develop across the region Sunday and continue Monday. Southerly winds will gradually turn westerly and strengthen, with some of the highest gusts expected across exposed mountain locations.
The NWS recreational forecast shows gusts potentially reaching around 48 mph at Killington Monday. Jay Peak could see gusts near 39 mph, while Lake Placid in neighboring New York could reach around 30 mph.
Conditions will also become rougher on Lake Champlain. The NWS expects larger waves to develop in portions of the lake as winds increase, making conditions more challenging for recreational boaters.
Around Colchester Reef, sustained winds could approach 30 mph Monday afternoon, with gusts around 38 mph in the forecast. Burton Island could see gusts near 35 mph.
Wind speeds can vary significantly depending on elevation, exposure and location on the lake, so those values should not be interpreted as representative of every community across Vermont.
The increasingly breezy pattern follows a tranquil Saturday and arrives during a popular time for fall recreation across the Green Mountains. Hikers and boaters should account for stronger winds when planning activities, particularly Monday.
For Vermont, the main change through Monday will be the strengthening wind rather than a major temperature event. Residents and visitors heading to Lake Champlain or higher elevations should check the latest localized NWS recreational forecast before setting out.
