Burlington, VT – Residents across Vermont should prepare for a wet finish to the weekend as rain spreads northward Sunday evening, October 11, bringing several hours of showers before conditions gradually improve Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, rain is expected to develop across southern Vermont around sunset Sunday before expanding into central and northern portions of the state overnight. Northeastern Vermont may not see precipitation arrive until closer to midnight.
Rain Arrives at Different Times Across Vermont Southern communities, including Springfield and Rutland, are expected to experience some of the earliest rainfall Sunday evening.
Farther north, areas around Montpelier, Middlebury and Burlington will see rain chances increase later in the evening.
Communities in northeastern Vermont, including Newport and Island Pond, may experience a later arrival as precipitation continues spreading north.
The weather service's forecast indicates precipitation probabilities could reach approximately 90% in Springfield and Randolph Sunday evening, while Rutland could see chances near 85%.
How Much Rain Is Expected? Most locations are forecast to receive between 0.1 and 0.5 inch of rainfall through Monday morning.
Locally higher totals are possible, with the greatest accumulations generally expected across southern portions of the forecast area.
The system is expected to produce widespread rain rather than a brief, isolated shower.
Monday Morning Travel Outlook Rain is forecast to taper off early Monday morning as the system moves out of the region.
Drivers traveling Interstate 89, Interstate 91 and U.S. Route 7 late Sunday or early Monday should be prepared for wet pavement and potentially reduced visibility during periods of rainfall.
Communities across northern New York, including Plattsburgh and Lake Placid, are also included in the weather service's forecast area and could experience overnight showers.
