Burlington, VT – Vermont’s mid October weather is leaning warm and wet, with federal outlooks favoring both above normal temperatures and above normal precipitation from Oct. 12 18.
The Climate Prediction Center’s 8 14 day outlook, issued Oct. 4, places Vermont within areas favored for warmer than normal temperatures and wetter than normal conditions during the seven day period.
For Vermont, that points toward a relatively mild stretch for the middle of October. It does not mean every afternoon will be warm or that every night will stay mild. CPC outlooks measure the average temperature across the entire period rather than forecasting specific daily highs and lows.
That leaves room for the sharp day to night temperature swings common during the fall. Chilly nights — and eventually frost where temperatures fall far enough — remain possible, but this outlook alone cannot determine whether frost will occur in any particular Vermont community.
The wetter signal works the same way. Above normal precipitation is favored for Oct. 12 18, but the CPC map does not provide rainfall totals or identify which days could bring rain.
Residents should therefore read the outlook as a broad warmer and wetter pattern , not a forecast for seven straight days of rain.
Specific rain chances, overnight lows and any developing frost concerns should become clearer once the period moves into the National Weather Service’s shorter range forecasts.
