Burlington, VT – A chilly Sunday morning across Vermont and northern New York will give way to a stretch of milder, dry weather, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the upper 50s and lower 60s early this week. However, overnight temperatures will remain cold enough for frost and freezing conditions in some communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, temperatures will quickly recover into the 50s Sunday, Oct. 18, before warming further Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 19–20.
Forecasters expect highs generally in the middle 50s to lower 60s early in the week, followed by slightly cooler conditions toward the weekend.
How warm will Vermont get this week?
Burlington is forecast to reach approximately 57 degrees Monday, while Montpelier could climb into the lower 60s.
Communities including Middlebury, Rutland and St. Johnsbury should also experience comfortable afternoon temperatures for mid October.
Across northern New York, Plattsburgh, Malone and Massena are expected to follow a similar pattern, with daytime temperatures generally reaching the 50s and lower 60s.
Cold nights remain a concern
Despite the afternoon warmup, overnight lows will frequently fall into the upper 20s and 30s.
The coldest readings are expected in sheltered valleys and colder mountain communities, where frost or freezing temperatures may develop.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants should remain mindful of nighttime temperatures, particularly where the growing season has not already ended.
Will rain return this week?
The National Weather Service expects dry weather to prevail through the week, providing favorable conditions for outdoor activities and fall travel.
Temperatures should ease slightly later in the week, although a significant cold outbreak is not indicated in the supplied forecast.
Looking ahead: NOAA's Oct. 25–31 outlook favors above normal temperatures across much of New England, suggesting the potential for another relatively mild stretch heading toward Halloween.
For now, the main story is a dry week with comfortable afternoons and chilly mornings across Vermont and northern New York.
