Burlington, VT – Rain chances will increase across northern Vermont and northern New York late Thursday, with widespread showers expected Thursday night and Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a cold front crossing the region will bring the rain, which is expected to be light to moderate at times. The highest rainfall amounts are forecast across the northern mountains.
The Weather Service’s storm total precipitation forecast covers the period from 8 p.m. Thursday through 8 p.m. Friday. The map shows many locations receiving a few tenths of an inch, while portions of the northern mountains could approach three quarters of an inch or more.
Rainfall amounts are expected to vary considerably by location and terrain. Forecast values shown across the region range from less than one tenth of an inch in some areas to around 0.7 to 0.9 inch in some northern locations.
Shower chances remain relatively limited during much of Thursday before increasing later in the day. Probabilities rise substantially Thursday night and remain elevated into Friday across communities including Burlington, Plattsburgh, St. Albans, Newport and portions of the Adirondacks.
The front is expected to continue moving through the region Friday, keeping showers in the forecast for much of the day.
No widespread heavy rain threat is indicated in the outlook. Instead, forecasters expect periods of generally light to moderate rain, with the greatest totals favored in higher terrain across the northern part of the region.
Showers should begin tapering off Friday evening as the front moves away. Residents across northern Vermont and northern New York can expect drier weather to return for the weekend.
