Burlington, VT – Three words appearing in a winter weather warning could signal a storm far more dangerous than the heavy snow and icy roads Vermonters experience each year. As the 2026 27 winter season begins, residents across Burlington, Montpelier, Rutland and the Green Mountains should recognize what those words mean before extreme conditions develop.
According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, the National Weather Service is expanding the use of "Particularly Dangerous Situation," or PDS, wording in select Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings this winter.
The designation is intended for rare, potentially historic storms when forecasters have high confidence that conditions pose an exceptional threat to human life and critical infrastructure.
What Are the Three Words Vermont Residents Should Know?
"Particularly Dangerous Situation" is not simply another way of describing heavy snowfall or freezing rain.
A Blizzard Warning already signals dangerous winds and severely reduced visibility. Adding PDS wording emphasizes an extraordinary level of danger.
The terminology may also appear in exceptional Ice Storm Warnings when damaging ice accumulation threatens essential services.
Why Could This Matter Across Vermont?
Vermont's mountainous terrain can make winter travel especially hazardous when heavy snow, strong winds and freezing precipitation combine.
During extreme storms, Interstate 89 between Burlington and Montpelier and Interstate 91 along eastern Vermont could experience dangerous conditions or closures.
Significant ice accumulation can also bring down trees and power lines, potentially leaving rural communities without electricity or reliable heating.
These are examples of possible impacts, not predictions of an approaching storm.
Is PDS a New Winter Weather Warning?
No. PDS is additional wording within certain existing Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings, not a separate warning category.
Most winter storms will not receive the designation.
What Should Vermonters Do?
If PDS wording appears, residents should stay off roads, follow emergency instructions and prepare for potentially prolonged disruptions.
The expanded terminology does not mean a catastrophic storm is currently forecast for Vermont.
However, seeing "Particularly Dangerous Situation" in an official warning signals an exceptional, potentially life threatening emergency requiring immediate attention.
