Burlington, Vermont – Vermont and northern New York face their coldest night of fall tonight, with some mountain valleys nearing freezing and patchy frost possible.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, lows will range from near freezing in mountain valleys to the upper 40s near Lake Champlain. Patchy frost is possible in colder valleys of the Adirondacks and Vermont's Northeast Kingdom.
The temperature outlook shows a sharp difference between the Champlain Valley and colder communities at higher elevations and farther east and west. Burlington is expected to reach about 48 degrees, while St. Albans and Plattsburgh, New York, are near 45.
Temperatures fall much lower in parts of the Adirondacks. Saranac Lake and Newcomb are around 36 degrees, while Old Forge is near 35. Cranberry Lake is around 39.
Across Vermont, the Northeast Kingdom will also be among the colder areas. Newport is near 41 degrees, while St. Johnsbury is around 40. Elsewhere, Montpelier is near 41, Middlebury and Rutland are around 43, and Bennington is near 41.
Residents in colder valleys with sensitive outdoor plants should be prepared for patchy frost tonight. Conditions could vary considerably over short distances, especially between warmer areas near Lake Champlain and sheltered mountain valleys.
The cold will not last through the week. The National Weather Service says warmer temperatures return by midweek, making tonight the key period for residents concerned about frost and near freezing temperatures.
