Salt Lake City, UT – A Freeze Warning has been issued for portions of central Utah as temperatures are expected to fall as low as 31 degrees Thursday night, October 15, threatening crops, gardens and exposed outdoor plumbing across several valleys through Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, the warning takes effect at 9 p.m. MDT Thursday and remains in place until 9 a.m. MDT Friday, October 16. Residents in affected communities are being urged to take precautions before freezing temperatures arrive.
Three Central Utah Areas Under Freeze Warning The warning covers eastern Juab and Millard counties, the Sanpete Valley and the Sevier Valley.
Communities included in the alert are Richfield, Salina, Ephraim, Manti, Mount Pleasant, Nephi, Fillmore and Scipio.
Temperatures are forecast to drop to around 31 degrees in some locations, creating conditions favorable for frost and freezing damage.
The National Weather Service warns that even a brief period of subfreezing temperatures could kill sensitive vegetation and damage crops or gardens that remain exposed overnight.
Protect Outdoor Pipes and Plants Before 9 PM Residents are encouraged to bring vulnerable potted plants indoors and cover sensitive outdoor vegetation before temperatures fall Thursday evening.
The Weather Service also recommends draining in ground sprinkler systems and covering aboveground pipes to reduce the risk of freezing damage.
Homeowners with exposed irrigation equipment should take precautions before the warning begins.
Early Friday morning temperatures could remain near or below freezing across affected valleys, making the overnight period particularly important for agricultural operations and homeowners with outdoor plumbing.
The Freeze Warning is scheduled to expire at 9 a.m. MDT Friday as temperatures recover, unless additional alerts are issued.
Residents can monitor updated forecasts through the National Weather Service and check Utah Department of Transportation resources for potential travel impacts.
