Salt Lake City, UT – Persistent rain could flood streets, overwhelm drainage systems and swell creeks across northern Utah Sunday, October 11, through Monday, October 12. An official Flood Watch covers Salt Lake City and surrounding communities, raising concerns for motorists and holiday travelers.
According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, the Flood Watch remains in effect from midnight Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday. Excessive rainfall could trigger flooding in urban areas, rivers, streams and locations near recent wildfire burn scars.
Flood Watch Covers Northern Utah
The watch includes Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Sandy, Ogden, Provo, Tooele and surrounding valleys and mountains.
Forecasters warn that runoff could overwhelm poor drainage areas and flood roads, particularly where heavier rainfall develops.
Moisture associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel is moving into northern Utah, creating a prolonged rainfall event.
Rain Chances Reach 100% Sunday
Salt Lake City faces a 100% chance of precipitation Sunday, with showers and possible thunderstorms.
Temperatures should reach approximately 69 degrees.
A separate Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday for portions of northern Utah, with gusts potentially reaching 50 mph.
Monday, October 12, brings another 80% chance of rain, with temperatures reaching 63 degrees.
Areas of blowing dust are also possible before 9 a.m.
Wet Weather Continues Tuesday
Although the Flood Watch is scheduled to expire Monday afternoon, showers remain in the forecast.
Tuesday, October 13, brings a 100% precipitation chance, with highs near 54 degrees.
Wednesday remains unsettled, with additional showers and highs around 55 degrees.
Drier Conditions Return Late Week
Sunshine returns Thursday, with highs near 61 degrees. Friday and Saturday warm to approximately 65 and 67 degrees.
Residents should avoid flooded roads, monitor official warnings and remain alert near creeks and drainage channels.
