Mazatlán, Mexico – Hurricane Simon is threatening portions of western Mexico this week, with hurricane conditions, potentially life threatening flooding and dangerous coastal surf expected between Tuesday, October 13, and Saturday, October 17.
According to the National Hurricane Center's 2 a.m. MST advisory Tuesday, hurricane conditions are likely across Las Islas Marias within approximately 24 hours. A hurricane warning remains in effect for the islands, while a hurricane watch covers portions of Mexico's western coastline.
Simon was moving slowly toward the north northwest at approximately 3 mph, with maximum sustained winds near 90 mph, according to the updated forecast information shown by Mexico's National Meteorological Service.
Forecasters warn that Simon could approach western Mexico later this week at or near hurricane strength, placing coastal communities on alert for worsening conditions.
Heavy Rain Raises Flooding Concerns
The hurricane is expected to produce significant rainfall across portions of west central Mexico over the next several days.
The National Hurricane Center warns that heavy rainfall could trigger life threatening flash flooding and mudslides, particularly in mountainous communities and areas with steep terrain.
Residents in flood prone locations should monitor local emergency information as rainfall spreads inland.
Dangerous Surf Expected Along Coast
Large ocean swells are also forecast along southwestern and west central Mexico's coastlines, producing potentially life threatening surf and rip currents.
These conditions could make swimming and other coastal activities extremely dangerous, even outside the hurricane's immediate path.
What Happens Next?
Forecast guidance indicates Simon could move closer to the western Mexican coastline later this week, with its projected path extending toward the Sinaloa region by Saturday.
The forecast remains subject to change, especially because the hurricane is moving slowly.
Residents and travelers should continue monitoring official advisories at hurricanes.gov and follow instructions from local emergency authorities.
