San Antonio, TX – Millions of Texans will gain an extra hour overnight Saturday, October 31, as daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, November 1, bringing earlier sunsets and a return to standard time across the state.
According to the National Weather Service office serving Austin and San Antonio, residents should turn their clocks back one hour before going to bed Saturday night. The annual adjustment marks the transition from daylight saving time to standard time.
At 2 a.m. Sunday, clocks will move backward to 1 a.m., giving residents an additional hour overnight.
The change affects major Texas communities, including San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth and El Paso. Most of Texas will return to Central Standard Time, while El Paso and portions of far West Texas will return to Mountain Standard Time.
Smartphones, computers and many digital devices will adjust automatically. However, clocks in vehicles, kitchens and other household appliances may require manual changes.
The National Weather Service says the time adjustment will bring earlier sunrises and sunsets, meaning daylight will arrive earlier in the morning but disappear sooner during the evening.
Drivers and pedestrians should prepare for darker conditions during afternoon commutes, particularly around busy intersections and residential neighborhoods.
Forecasters are also encouraging residents to use the time change as a reminder to test smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and NOAA Weather Radios.
Checking batteries and ensuring emergency alert devices function properly can help households remain prepared for severe weather and other emergencies.
Daylight saving time will return Sunday, March 14, 2027, when clocks move forward one hour.
For now, Texans should remember to set any manually operated clocks back Saturday night before heading to bed.
