SAN ANTONIO, TX — Residents across South Central Texas face another stretch of intense October heat this week, with temperatures climbing into the 90s and heat index values potentially reaching 108 degrees before a cold front brings cooler weather by Friday, October 16.
According to the National Weather Service Austin San Antonio office, warm and humid conditions will continue through midweek, with afternoon temperatures ranging from the mid 80s to mid 90s. The highest heat index values could reach 100 to 108 degrees in some locations.
Heat Index Could Reach 108 Degrees
Monday, October 12, will bring highs between 86 and 96 degrees, with moderate to breezy southeast winds.
Isolated to scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms are possible near and east of Interstate 35, including portions of the Austin and San Antonio region.
Tuesday and Wednesday will remain unusually warm.
Austin could reach 94 degrees Tuesday, while San Antonio climbs to 95 degrees. Del Rio and Eagle Pass could approach 96 to 97 degrees.
The combination of heat and humidity could make outdoor conditions feel significantly hotter than actual air temperatures.
Cold Front Brings Rain and Cooler Air
A cold front is expected to arrive late Thursday, October 15, into Friday, October 16, bringing breezy northerly winds and additional opportunities for showers and thunderstorms.
Rain chances will focus on the Southern Edwards Plateau, western Hill Country and Rio Grande region.
The National Weather Service indicates the heaviest rainfall is most likely from Val Verde County north into the Concho Valley.
Weekend Temperatures Could Drop Into the 40s
By Saturday, October 17, afternoon temperatures could fall into the 60s and 70s across portions of the region.
Austin is forecast to reach 75 degrees Saturday, compared with 94 Tuesday.
Fredericksburg could fall to 52 degrees Saturday morning, while overnight temperatures in some Hill Country communities could reach the upper 40s by Sunday.
Forecasters caution that temperatures could trend even cooler as the approaching front becomes better defined.
