San Angelo, Texas – Scattered thunderstorms could bring heavy rain, minor flooding and wind gusts up to 45 mph this afternoon and early evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Abilene/San Angelo, thunderstorm chances range from 30% to 50% across West Central Texas. Storms will be scattered, meaning some communities could remain dry while others receive locally heavy downpours.
The main concerns are heavy rainfall and localized minor flooding, along with gusty winds reaching 45 mph. Residents with afternoon or early evening outdoor plans should be prepared to move indoors if thunderstorms approach.
Temperatures will remain above normal despite Tuesday marking the beginning of astronomical fall. Most of the region will reach the lower 90s during the afternoon.
The Weather Service graphic shows highs around 93 degrees in San Angelo and Ballinger, 92 in Abilene, 91 in Sweetwater and 94 around Brownwood and Junction. Thunderstorm chances vary across the region, with a 50% chance shown near Sterling City and 40% around Abilene and San Angelo.
Drivers could encounter brief periods of heavy rain where storms develop. Water may collect in low lying or poor drainage areas, so motorists should avoid roads covered by water.
Tuesday is also the autumnal equinox, which marks the start of astronomical fall in the Northern Hemisphere. Daylight will continue to decrease as the season progresses toward the winter solstice.
For West Central Texas, however, summerlike temperatures remain in place Tuesday. The more immediate concern is the afternoon and early evening thunderstorm window, when locally heavy rain and 45 mph gusts will be possible.
