Amarillo, TX – Drivers across the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles face potentially difficult travel conditions Tuesday, Nov. 3, as strong northwest winds sweep across the region following Monday's cold front, with some locations potentially experiencing gusts exceeding 45 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the strongest wind gusts are expected between 5 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday, creating concerns for motorists, particularly those traveling along east west highways.
Strongest Winds Expected Through Early Afternoon Forecasters indicate that wind gusts could reach 40 to 45 mph around Guymon, Canadian, Wheeler and Clarendon, while other communities across the region may experience gusts between 30 and 40 mph.
Isolated gusts exceeding 45 mph are possible during the morning and early afternoon.
The strong crosswinds could make driving more challenging for high profile vehicles, including tractor trailers, recreational vehicles and vehicles towing trailers.
Interstate 40, which crosses the Texas Panhandle through Amarillo, is among the major east west travel routes where drivers should remain alert for sudden gusts.
The National Weather Service also warns that unsecured outdoor items could be blown around.
