Amarillo, Texas – Rain and storms will expand across the Texas Panhandle tonight into Wednesday, with localized flooding, lightning and gusty winds possible.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, precipitation chances increase tonight and continue through Wednesday as moisture builds across the combined Texas and Oklahoma panhandles. The agency identifies localized flooding, lightning and gusty winds as potential hazards.
From 10 p.m. Tuesday through 10 a.m. Wednesday, the highest rain chances are generally west of Amarillo. The Weather Service shows probabilities of 50% to 70% across parts of the western Texas Panhandle, while areas near Amarillo and points east generally have lower chances.
Rain becomes more widespread after 10 a.m. Wednesday. Chances climb to 70% to 90% across portions of the western Panhandle, including areas around Dalhart and west of Amarillo.
The central Panhandle has a 50% to 70% chance during the day Wednesday, including the Amarillo area and locations toward Borger. Farther east, probabilities generally decrease to 30% to 50%, with 15% to 30% shown near Beaver in the Oklahoma Panhandle.
Drivers should watch for water collecting on roads where heavier rain develops and avoid flooded crossings. Anyone outdoors should move inside when thunder is heard because lightning accompanies thunderstorms.
Moisture will continue entering the region Tuesday and linger into Wednesday, providing increasing opportunities for rain. The highest probabilities shown by the Weather Service occur from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening, particularly across the western and central Panhandle.
