Amarillo, TX – A significant shift in the weather pattern could bring widespread rainfall and noticeably cooler temperatures to the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles this weekend, Oct. 24 25, with some communities facing a 40% to 60% chance of receiving at least one inch of rain.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, temperatures will remain unusually warm through Friday, with afternoon highs in the 70s and 80s before a cooling trend develops.
Rain Chances Increase Saturday Night
Rain could begin developing across the western Panhandles as early as Friday afternoon or evening, Oct. 23.
However, the greatest opportunity for widespread precipitation arrives Saturday night into Sunday, when an approaching weather system is expected to bring increasing moisture into the region.
Forecasters indicate that western and central portions of the Panhandles currently have the greatest potential for higher rainfall totals.
Uncertainty remains regarding available moisture across southeastern areas, which could influence how much rain those communities receive.
The National Weather Service currently considers the threat of severe thunderstorms low.
Temperatures Drop Into the 60s
Friday will remain relatively warm, with highs between 70 and 80 degrees and southerly winds of 20 to 30 mph.
By Saturday, afternoon temperatures are forecast to fall into the 63 75 degree range, with mostly cloudy skies and increasing rain chances.
Sunday will bring additional cooling, with highs ranging from 60 to 72 degrees and overnight lows dipping into the mid 40s to mid 50s.
Residents traveling over the weekend should prepare for wet roadways, changing visibility and periods of rainfall, particularly Saturday night and Sunday.
Although rainfall amounts remain uncertain, forecasters are increasingly confident that a wetter, cooler pattern will develop across the region.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts as the weekend approaches.
