Lubbock, TX – A modest warmup is underway across West Texas Sunday, Oct. 18, with sunshine and afternoon temperatures climbing into the 60s. The pleasant conditions are expected to continue as the region heads into a gradually warmer stretch of weather this week.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, dry weather and mostly sunny skies will prevail Sunday, with afternoon highs ranging from the middle to upper 60s across the South Plains and surrounding communities.
The forecast, updated at 2:58 a.m. Sunday, shows temperatures reaching 65 degrees in Lubbock, Levelland and Brownfield, while some western communities could approach 70 degrees.
Which West Texas communities will be warmest?
Muleshoe is expected to reach 69 degrees Sunday, making it one of the warmest locations shown in the regional forecast.
Friona and Aspermont could reach 68 degrees, while Post and Guthrie are forecast near 67.
Farther north, Plainview and Tulia should reach approximately 64 degrees, with similar temperatures expected around Crosbyton.
The sunshine should provide favorable conditions for outdoor activities, travel and residents enjoying the fall weather.
Will temperatures continue climbing this week?
The National Weather Service expects a warming trend to continue through the upcoming week, although the supplied outlook does not specify daily high temperatures beyond Sunday.
For now, dry conditions remain the primary feature of Sunday's forecast, with no significant precipitation indicated in the latest local update.
Looking ahead: NOAA's longer range outlook for Oct. 25 31 favors above normal temperatures across much of Texas, suggesting warmer than average conditions could continue as Halloween approaches.
However, the longer range precipitation outlook also favors above normal rainfall across portions of West Texas, introducing uncertainty about how long the dry pattern will last.
For now, residents can expect a sunny Sunday with highs in the 60s, followed by a gradual warming trend during the week ahead.
