HOUSTON — Open enrollment for 2027 health insurance begins Sunday, Nov. 1, giving Texas residents an opportunity to compare Marketplace plans, review premiums and determine whether they qualify for financial assistance.
Texas residents use the federal Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov . Open enrollment runs from Nov. 1, 2026, through Jan. 15, 2027 .
Consumers who enroll or change plans by Dec. 15 can have coverage begin Jan. 1. Those enrolling between Dec. 16 and Jan. 15 generally receive coverage beginning Feb. 1.
Texas residents can compare 2027 plans and prices HealthCare.gov has opened its 2027 enrollment system, allowing Texans to compare available health insurance plans based on ZIP code, household size and expected income.
Estimated prices shown through the Marketplace can include savings for which a household may qualify. Exact premiums are calculated after a consumer completes a full Marketplace application.
That makes ZIP code specific comparison especially important in Texas, where plan availability and premiums can vary considerably between Houston, Dallas Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and rural communities.
What Texas residents should check Houston area residents and consumers statewide should compare more than the monthly health insurance premium.
Consumers should review:
Monthly premiums Deductibles Co pays and coinsurance Maximum out of pocket costs Prescription drug coverage Doctor and hospital networks Eligibility for premium tax credits Returning Marketplace customers should also compare their existing coverage with new 2027 options. HealthCare.gov specifically advises current customers to review new plans and prices before renewing because another option may better fit their needs or budget.
Residents should update their expected 2027 household income and family information because those details can affect the savings available through the Marketplace.
Financial assistance may lower premiums Texas residents buying Marketplace coverage may qualify for savings on monthly health insurance premiums based on household income and other eligibility factors.
HealthCare.gov allows consumers to preview whether they may qualify for lower premiums before completing enrollment.
The actual amount a household pays can therefore differ significantly from an insurer's full unsubsidized premium.
Consumers should look at both the monthly premium and expected annual out of pocket costs before selecting coverage.
Texas consumers should verify provider networks Residents should also confirm whether their doctors, hospitals, specialists and prescription drugs remain covered under any plan they are considering.
A lower monthly premium can come with a higher deductible, narrower provider network or different prescription drug coverage, making total annual cost more important than the premium alone.
The Texas Department of Insurance advises consumers shopping for health coverage to compare benefits, networks and costs carefully before choosing a plan.
Enrollment deadlines matter Texas residents who want health insurance coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2027 , should enroll or make plan changes by Dec. 15 .
Open enrollment continues through Jan. 15, 2027 . Consumers enrolling from Dec. 16 through Jan. 15 generally receive coverage beginning Feb. 1.
After Jan. 15, most residents need to qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to enroll in or change Marketplace coverage.
Qualifying events can include losing existing insurance, getting married, having a child or moving. Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program can accept applications throughout the year for eligible residents.
Texas residents can compare 2027 health insurance plans, estimate potential financial assistance and enroll through HealthCare.gov .
