Houston, TX – Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected around Southeast Texas this weekend, with 2 to 4 inches of rain possible along parts of the coast.
According to the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston, a weak frontal boundary moving south and a trough in the Gulf will support periods of rain through the weekend. The main window for moderate to heavy rainfall is late Saturday into Sunday.
Coastal areas are expected to receive the most rain. The NWS projects 2 to 4 inches spread over several days, with its rainfall map showing 4 to 6 inches possible near Galveston. Around 1.5 to 2 inches is forecast near Angleton, while generally lower amounts are expected farther inland.
Forecasters cautioned that the precise location of the heaviest rain remains uncertain. The heaviest rainfall is currently expected offshore, but a northward shift in the frontal boundary would also move the corridor of higher totals inland.
Strong thunderstorms could produce rainfall rates of 2 to 3 inches or more per hour. The NWS said storms should generally move fairly quickly, but localized heavy downpours could still cause minor street flooding and rises on area bayous, creeks and rivers. Gusty winds are also possible near stronger storms.
Rain chances Saturday reach 80% in Galveston, 70% in Angleton and 55% in Houston. Galveston remains at 80% Sunday, while Houston rises to 60%.
Rain chances diminish sharply early next week. Houston's forecast drops to 20% Monday and near zero Tuesday through Thursday.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts through the weekend, particularly near the coast, as small changes in the frontal boundary could shift where the heaviest rainfall develops.
