Houston, TX – Strong northerly winds and elevated wildfire concerns are affecting Southeast Texas Saturday, October 17, as a Wind Advisory remains in effect for coastal barrier islands through early afternoon. Despite mostly sunny skies and comfortable temperatures, residents face potentially hazardous conditions along the coast and increased fire danger inland.
According to the National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston, the Wind Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. Saturday for barrier islands, where sustained north winds of 20 to 30 mph and peak gusts of 35 to 45 mph are expected.
Coastal Wind Advisory Brings Gusts Up to 45 MPH
Strong winds could make driving difficult, particularly for high profile vehicles traveling through exposed coastal areas.
Residents should secure loose outdoor furniture, decorations and other lightweight objects that could be displaced by sudden gusts.
Winds are expected to gradually weaken during the afternoon, although breezy conditions may continue near the coastline.
Elevated Wildfire Danger Across Southeast Texas
The National Weather Service also warns that gusty winds and dry air will create elevated fire weather conditions Saturday.
The Texas A&M Forest Service indicates high to very high fire danger across portions of the region, with localized extreme conditions possible.
Outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents should avoid activities that could produce sparks.
Burn bans are established in several counties, including Harris, Fort Bend, Brazoria, Galveston, Chambers, Austin, Burleson and San Jacinto.
Cooler Temperatures Expected Saturday Night
Afternoon temperatures will remain comfortable, with highs ranging from 68 to 73 degrees inland and 72 to 74 degrees along beaches.
Saturday night will turn noticeably cooler under partly cloudy skies.
Overnight lows are forecast between 46 and 54 degrees inland, while coastal locations should remain warmer at 54 to 63 degrees.
Houston is expected to reach approximately 71 degrees Saturday before dropping to around 54 degrees overnight.
