HOUSTON, TX – A cold front is sweeping across Southeast Texas Friday, October 16, bringing strong north winds, scattered coastal showers and a dramatic shift toward cooler fall weather. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph in advisory areas, while overnight temperatures are expected to fall to their lowest levels since early May.
According to the National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston, a Wind Advisory is in effect for portions of Southeast Texas beginning Friday morning, with sustained north winds of 20 to 30 mph and peak gusts between 30 and 40 mph.
For inland advisory areas, the alert runs from 7 a.m. Friday until 1 a.m. Saturday, October 17. Coastal island locations remain under the advisory from 10 a.m. Friday through 1 p.m. Saturday.
The strongest winds could create hazardous driving conditions for high profile vehicles , particularly along exposed roads and coastal highways. Residents should secure outdoor furniture, decorations and other lightweight objects.
Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible along the coast and offshore Friday morning as the cold front moves through.
Afternoon temperatures will range from 67 to 77 degrees inland, while beaches could remain between 76 and 80 degrees.
A noticeably colder night follows Friday's frontal passage. Inland temperatures are forecast to drop between 46 and 53 degrees, with coastal lows ranging from 53 to 59 degrees.
Houston is forecast to reach approximately 54 degrees overnight, while College Station could fall to 49 degrees and Huntsville to 48 degrees.
The National Weather Service says these will be the coolest temperatures experienced across the region since early May, more than 160 days ago.
Saturday, October 17, should bring sunny skies and pleasant fall conditions, with inland highs between 66 and 70 degrees and coastal temperatures reaching 70 to 72 degrees.
North winds of 15 to 20 mph are expected Saturday before gradually diminishing during the afternoon.
